The Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer
Spanning 66 counties across Texas, the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer is one of the most expansive and essential groundwater systems in the state. It provides drinking water to over 12 million Texans and supports more than 9 million acres of farmland, fueling both urban life and rural economies.
This aquifer sustains local communities, family farms, wildlife habitats, and entire ecosystems stretching from East Texas to the Hill Country and the Gulf Coast. Its health affects water access, food production, and the long-term viability of our natural resources.
But today, its future is at risk. Industrial-scale groundwater extraction threatens to overdraw the aquifer faster than it can recharge. Without stronger oversight and public engagement, we face long-term damage to a water source that cannot be easily replaced.
This isn’t just about one town — it’s about the future of water in Texas. And it’s time to protect what’s ours.
The Drill down
I’m not an expert–just a concerned Texan trying to make sense of what’s happening. The Drill Down is where I share what I’ve learned about water rights, greenwashing, local policies, corporate greed, and the quiet decisions that impact us all. These posts break complex issues into manageable, plain-language pieces–so we can stay informed, together. I include links to sources in the articles as well as in the Resources area. Check out some of the articles featured below.
Stay informed - take action
If you’re concerned about Texas groundwater and leadership decisions, you’re not alone. The Resources page is your starting point for meeting details, alerts, and practical tools to help you speak up and protect what matters. I’ve also gathered helpful articles, templates, and public documents so you can understand the key issues–from permitting and aquifer science to the politics behind the policies. Whether you’re just getting up to speed or ready to take a stand, there’s something here to support your next step.
Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children's children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance.
